“Alzheimer’s Disease: Past, Present, and Future” – November 13, 2008
In honor of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, A free, annual educational lecture sponsored by the WCMP will be held at the Madison Marriott West on November 13, 2008
The seventh annual educational seminar is designed to present valuable information about the disease to physicians, professional caregivers, and the community at large. Specifically, the seminar will address the brain changes that occur over the course of the disease, clarify the currently known facts from common misunderstandings, explain new advances in early detection, as well as provide a message of hope regarding the opportunities to be involved in the advances in research being made here in Wisconsin.
The event will feature exhibit booths with local businesses and area resource organizations pertinent to the needs of Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers for one hour prior to the presentations. Key speakers for the 2008 lecture will be Dr. Sanjay Asthana, Director of the WCMP, Head of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Director of the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) in the Madison VA Hospital. Dr. Asthana holds many other leadership positions in the field of Geriatrics and Alzheimer’s disease research.
Following the address by Dr. Asthana, Whitney Wharton, PhD, will address the present day research for the AD community discussing and clarifying misunderstandings with research and genetic testing. Dr. Wharton is a postdoctoral researcher studying women’s health, estrogen and testosterone and their influence on cognition.
The immediate future of AD prevention may potentially lie in the ability to identify plaques and tangles at an earlier stage of life, thus enhancing treatments and care of those with a family history of AD. Sterling Johnson, PhD will review new advancements in the fields of MRI imaging and other testing to further advance research and discoveries in science to aid Alzheimer’s disease research.
Reception with hor'sderves will be available before the main program.
